The Meaning of "Change Your Mind"

Sometimes you want to do something, and then later on you decide you do not want to do it. That's known as changing your mind. But that's not what I mean here by "Change Your Mind".

When The One Step Program asks you to "Change Your Mind", it is talking about changing the way you think.

The way you think determines which actions you take in response to what is going on around you. For example, if a person with a drug problem has a bad day, it is the way they think that might lead that person to take drugs as a response. But if you do not have a drug problem, and you do not think the same way as a person with a drug problem, you would not take drugs in response to having a bad day. Instead, as a person with a drinking problem, you might drink in response to having a bad day. The two of you think differently, and the actions that you take differ in response to the same bad day. The difference between the two of you is your thinking.

By changing the way you think, you can change the actions that you take in response to what is going on around you. When you "Change Your Mind" you are changing the way you think. Once you "Change Your Mind" with regard to drinking you will no longer respond to what is going on around you in the same way as a person with a drinking problem would respond. You will now respond in a way that a person who does not have a drinking problem would respond.

That's what makes The One Step Program so effective. Once you "Change Your Mind" you do not have to fight the urge to drink as strongly as you once had to, because the urge has diminished or even disappeared. Eventually you have no more of an urge to drink than a person who never had a drinking problem.

The key to success in The One Step Program is learning how to "Change Your Mind" so that you no longer think like a person with a drinking problem.
